Abstract
The present invention relates to objects having self-cleaning surfaces, particles for producing the objects, and processes for producing the objects. The particles have a size in the micrometer to submicrometer range and a fissured structure in the nanometer range.
Claims (32)
1. An object having a self-cleaning surface having an artificial surface structure that is at least to some extent hydrophobic and is made from elevations and depressions, where the elevations and depressions are formed by particles secured to the surface, wherein the particles have a fissured structure with elevations or depressions or both in the nanometer range.
2. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in claim 1, wherein the particles are individual particles, aggregates or agglomerates.
3. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the particles have an average size of less than 50 µm.
4. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the particles have an average size of less than 30 µm.
5. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the particles have a BET surface area of 20 to 1,000 m2/g.
6. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the particles are made of at least one material selected from the group consisting of silicates, doped silicates, minerals, metal oxides, fumed or precipitated silicas, polymers, and metal powders.
7. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the particles are hydrophobic.
8. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the individual particles on the surface are separated at a distance that is from 0 to 10 times a diameter of the particles.
9. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the individual particles on the surface are separated at a distance that is from 2 to 3 times a diameter of the particles.
10. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the elevations or depressions have an average height of from 20 to 500 nm.
11. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the elevations or depressions have an average height of from 20 to 200 nm.
12. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the elevations or depressions on the particles are separated from each other at a distance below 500 nm.
13. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the elevations or depressions on the particles are separated from each other at a distance below 200 nm.
14. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the surface has a roll-off angle of less than 20°.
15. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein the self-cleaning surface has an advancing angle and a receding angle of a droplet of water applied to the surface of greater than 140°.
16. The object having the self-cleaning surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein the self-cleaning surface has a hysteresis of a droplet of water applied to the surface of less than 15°.
17. A process for producing a self-cleaning surface of an object having an artificial, at least to some extent hydrophobic, surface structure made from elevations and depressions, which process comprises:
securing particles having a fissured structure with elevations or depressions in the nanometer range to a surface of the object.
securing particles having a fissured structure with elevations or depressions in the nanometer range to a surface of the object.
18. The process as claimed in claim 17, wherein the particles are of at least one material selected from the group consisting of silicates and doped silicates, minerals, metal oxides, fumed or precipitated silicas, metal powders, and polymers.
19. The process as claimed in claim 17 or 18, wherein the particles are secured to the surface by a chemical or physical method.
20. The process as claimed in claim 19, wherein the particles are secured chemically using a fixative, or physically by (a) pressing the particles into the surface, (b) sintering the particles to one another, or (c) sintering particles to a fine-powder carrier material.
21. The process as claimed in any one of claims 17 to 20, wherein the particles are hydrophobic.
22. The process as claimed in any one of claims 17 to 20, wherein the particles have been made hydrophobic by virtue of treatment with at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the alkylsilanes, perfluoroalkylsilanes, alkyldisilazanes, fluoroalkylsilanes, disilazanes, waxes, paraffins, fatty esters, and functionalized long-chain alkane derivatives.
23. The process as claimed in any one of claims 17 to 20, wherein the particles are made hydrophobic after being secured to the surface.
24. The process as claimed in claim 23, wherein the particles are made hydrophobic by virtue of treatment with at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the alkylsilanes, perfluoroalkylsilanes, alkyldisilazanes, fluoroalkylsilanes, waxes, paraffins, fatty esters, and functionalized long-chain alkane derivatives, and fluoroalkane derivatives.
25. The process as claimed in any one of claims 17 to 24, wherein the object is nonplanar.
26. The process as claimed in any one of claims 17 to 25, wherein the self-cleaning surface is formed on a nonrigid surface of the object.
27. A particle which has a fissured structure with elevations or depressions or both in the nanometer range, for producing the object according to any one of claims 1 to 16.
28. The particle as claimed in claim 27, wherein the elevations or depressions have an average height of from 20 to 500 nm.
29. The particle as claimed in claim 27, wherein the elevations or depressions have an average height of from 20 to 200 nm.
30. The particle as claimed in any one of claims 27 to 29, wherein the elevations or depressions on the particle are separated at a distance of below 500 nm.
31. The particle as claimed in any one of claims 27 to 29, wherein the elevations or depressions on the particle are separated at a distance of below 200 nm.
32. The particle as claimed in any one of claims 27 to 31, which is made of at least one material selected from the group consisting of silicates, doped silicates, minerals, metal oxides, silicas, polymers and metal powders.
