Abstract

To produce scratch-resistant materials a composition comprising a polycondensation product, obtained by hydrolytic polycondensation of at least one inorganic compound, and at least one polyfunctional organic compound containing activatable functional groups is applied to a substrate, or the composition is subjected to an operation of shaping, curing and activating the functional groups of the organic compound, for example by heating.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for Manufacture of scratch-resistant materials, in particular Coatings with improved elasticity and adhesion, as well Compositions for use in this process.

Many items must be scratch-resistant or with scratch-resistant coatings can be provided as a Scratch sensitivity no practical use or only brief Operating times would allow. Many well-known scratch-resistant Coating materials mostly do not bring sufficient Improvement since they are either not scratch resistant and / or are not elastic enough or have insufficient adhesion with a suitable layer thickness on the substrate. Besides long curing times are often required.

Although this process leads to coatings that are related to many properties, e.g. Scratch resistance and transparency These are very satisfactory results Coatings for a number of applications yet in need of improvement.

The aim of the invention is therefore a method and Composition for the production of scratch-resistant materials to provide the coatings or moldings, which with regard to their water vapor permeability, light and UV stability, elasticity and adhesion to substrates various types are improved without sacrificing for other properties, such as Scratch and abrasion resistance or optical properties, have to be accepted.

Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von kratzfesten Materialien, insbesondere Beschichtungen mit verbesserter Elastizität und Haftung, bei dem man ein Polykondensat, das erhalten worden ist durch hydrolytische Vorkondensation, gegebenenfalls in Anwesenheit eines Kondensationskatalysators, von mindestens einer anorganischen, hydrolytisch polykondensierbaren monomeren oder bereits teilkondensierten (oligomeren) Verbindung mit einer geringeren Wassermenge als der zur vollständigen Hydrolyse der hydrolysierbaren Gruppen stöchiometrisch erforderlichen Menge entwederThe invention relates to a method for manufacturing of scratch-resistant materials, especially coatings with improved elasticity and adhesion, where one Polycondensate that has been obtained by hydrolytic Precondensation, possibly in the presence of a Condensation catalyst, of at least one inorganic, hydrolytically polycondensable monomers or already partially condensed (oligomeric) compound with a lower Amount of water as that for complete hydrolysis of the hydrolyzable groups stoichiometrically required amount either

das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß spätestens vor dem Aufbringen auf das Substrat bzw. spätestens vor Beginn des Formgebungsprozesses mindestens eine polyfunktionelle organische Verbindung zugegeben wird, die funktionelle Gruppen aufweist, die erst im Laufe oder nach Beendigung der Härtung aktiviert werden. which is characterized in that at the latest before Apply to the substrate or at the latest before the start of the Shaping process at least one polyfunctional organic compound is added, the functional groups exhibits that only in the course or after completion of the hardening to be activated.

In these organofunctional silanes, the group R ′ optionally by oxygen or sulfur atoms or  -NR ′ ′ - groups are interrupted.

Spezielle Beispiele für geeignete organofunktionelle Silane sind:Specific examples of suitable organofunctional silanes are:

W. Noll, "Chemie und Technologie der Silicone", Verlag Chemie GmbH, Weinheim/Bergstraße (1968).Some of these silanes are commercial products or leave them produce according to known methods; see. W. Noll, "Chemistry and technology of silicones ", Verlag Chemie GmbH, Weinheim / Bergstrasse (1968).

The index m = 1 is preferably in the silanes of the general formula I. At higher values of m there is a risk that the hardness of the material will decrease if too much such silane is used.

Instead of the monomeric starting silanes can optionally also precondensed oligomers soluble in the reaction medium  these silanes are used; i.e. straight chain or Cyclic, low molecular weight partial condensates (Polyorganosiloxanes) with a degree of condensation of e.g. approximately 2 to 100, in particular approximately 2 to 6. The same applies to other compounds which can be used according to the invention, e.g. Compounds of Al, Ti and Zr. If necessary, a Oligomeres are used, which are different from each other Has central atoms.

AlR3 (II)AlR 3 (II)

Acetylaceton und Acetessigsäureethylester.in which the radicals R, which may be the same or different, are halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, acyloxy or hydroxyl, it being possible for the groups just mentioned to be replaced in whole or in part by chelate ligands. The presence of a chelating ligand is particularly preferred when two or three identical R radicals lead to a compound AlR 3 which is very reactive with H 2 O and would thereby make it more difficult to control the hydrolysis reaction and to avoid precipitation. Examples of such radicals R are halogen and alkyl. The use of a chelate ligand is also advantageous for R = OH. Common chelating ligands are, for example, acetylacetone and ethyl acetoacetate.

Al salts of inorganic and organic acids such as HNO 3 , H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 and formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid and oxalic acid can also be used according to the invention. In this case, complexation with a chelating ligand is also recommended.

Specific examples of aluminum compounds which can be used according to the invention are Al (OCH 3 ) 3 , Al (OC 2 H 5 ) 3 , Al (On- C 3 H 7 ) 3 , Al (OiC 3 H 7 ) 3 , Al (OC 4 H 9 ) 3 , Al (OiC 4 H 9 ) 3 , Al (O-sec.-C 4 H 9 ) 3 , AlCl 3 , AlCl (OH) 2 , aluminum formate, aluminum acetate and aluminum oxalate and the corresponding (partially) chelated compounds, such as, for example the acetylacetonates. Compounds that are liquid at room temperature, such as Al (O-sec.-C 4 H 9 ) 3 and Al (OiC 3 H 7 ) 3, are particularly preferred.

Formel I), eingesetzt.Compounds of formula II are preferred together with hydrolytically polycondensable compounds of others Elements in particular Si (see e.g. Formula I), are used.

Bei einer weiteren Gruppe von erfindungsgemäß bevorzugt eingesetzten, hydrolytisch polykondensierbaren Verbindungen handelt es sich um solche der allgemeinen Formel IIIPreferred in another group of the invention used hydrolytically polycondensable compounds are those of the general formula III

Among the other hydrolytically polycondensable compounds not yet specifically mentioned above which can be used advantageously according to the invention are soluble, low-volatile oxides or such low-volatile oxides-forming compounds of elements of main groups Ia to Va or subgroups IIb, IIIb, Vb in the reaction medium to VIIIb of the periodic table. These are preferably derived from the following elements:
Alkaline earth metals such as Mg and Ca; B, Si, Sn, Pb, P, As, Sb, Bi, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn and / or V, with B, Si, Sn, Zn and P being particularly preferred. The lanthanides and actinides can optionally also be used.

Among the less volatile oxides, B 2 O 3 , P 2 O 5 and SnO 2 are particularly preferred.

Compounds which form low volatile oxides and are soluble in the reaction medium are, for example, inorganic acids, such as phosphoric acid and boric acid, and also their esters. Also suitable are, for example, halides such as SiCl 4 , HSiCl 3 , SnCl 4 and PCl 5 , and alkoxides such as Ca (OR) 2 , Si (OR) 4 , Sn (OR) 4 and VO (OR) 3 , where R is lower alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol, propanol or butanol. Other starting compounds which can be used are corresponding salts with volatile acids, for example acetates, such as silicon tetraacetate, basic acetates, such as basic lead acetate, and formates.

If the connections just mentioned are used, usually make up to 70, especially no more than 50, particularly preferably not more than 40 mol% of the Total number of moles of the inorganic compounds used.

Other particularly for the production of the inorganic network preferred mixtures of reaction components are e.g. in EP-A-1 71 493.

To produce the precondensate, the starting components are precondensed in the desired mixing ratio with a smaller amount of water than the amount stoichiometrically required for the complete hydrolysis of all hydrolyzable groups used. This substoichiometric amount of water is preferably metered in in such a way that local overconcentrations and precipitations caused thereby (of, for example, Al 2 O 3 × x H 2 O) are avoided. The preferred way of adding water depends on the choice of the inorganic compound. In principle, the more carefully the inorganic component reacts with water, the more carefully the water must be added. For example, in the case of silicic acid esters which are less reactive with water, water as such can be added slowly, and in the case of silicic acid esters with longer aliphatic radicals the presence of a condensation catalyst may be necessary.

CaCl2 × 6 H2O, erwiesen. With the very reactive inorganic components, such as the esters of titanium, zirconium, aluminum, boron and tin, water should only be added in very dosed amounts at the beginning. In this case, it is preferred not to add the water as such, but in the form of substances which slowly release water. In many cases it has proven particularly suitable to enter the amounts of water in the reaction mixture with the aid of moisture-laden adsorbents, for example silica gel or molecular sieves, water-containing organic solvents, for example 80% ethanol, or salt hydrates, for example CaCl 2 × 6 H 2 O. .

Another way is to supply water through a system that Contains components that react with each other while doing so slowly release water, e.g. in ester formation from alcohol and acid is the case (ccc = chemically controlled condensation).

The precondensation is preferably carried out in the presence of a Condensation catalyst. If necessary, especially then if one of the connections used is very non-polar (e.g. a silane with R ′ = aryl), at least one with water partially miscible organic solvent applied e.g. an aliphatic alcohol, such as ethanol, propanol, Isopropanol or butanol, an ether such as dimethoxyethane Esters, such as dimethylene glycol acetate, or a ketone, such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone.n-butanol is used as a solvent prefers. Any added during the precondensation or solvent formed is preferably not evaporated, but the reaction mixture becomes as such Further condensation used.

Protons or are suitable as condensation catalysts Hydroxyl ion releasing compounds and amines. Specific Examples are organic or inorganic acids, such as Hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid or Acetic acid, as well as organic or inorganic bases, such as Ammonia, alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, e.g. Sodium, potassium or calcium hydroxide, and in the reaction medium soluble amines, e.g. lower alkylamines or alkanolamines. Here are volatile acids and bases, in particular Hydrochloric acid, ammonia and triethylamine, particularly preferred. The total catalyst concentration can e.g. up to 3 Mol / liter.

It is particularly advantageous if one of the inorganic compounds used already acts as a condensation catalyst. In particular, the silanes of the general formula I which have one or more radicals R 'which are substituted by basic groups, for example -NH 2 , are to be mentioned here. For example, aminoalkylsilanes have proven very useful for these purposes. Specific examples of such compounds are q- aminopropylsilanes, in particular γ- aminopropyltri (m) ethoxysilane. The use of such compounds as reaction components has the additional advantage that a decisive improvement in the adhesion of the composition to various substrates, for example plastic, metal, glass, and at the same time a significant increase in scratch and abrasion resistance can be observed. Such reaction components acting as a condensation catalyst can be used either alone or in combination with the customary condensation catalysts mentioned above.

The precondensation is usually carried out at temperatures of -20 to 100 ° C, preferably at 0 to 30 ° C. At Use of an organic solvent can Pre-condensation even at temperatures up to the boiling temperature  of the solvent, but will also be here preferably carried out at 0 to 30 ° C.

If necessary, you can start with one or more Starting components or part of one, several or all Pre-condense the initial components, then the rest Mix in the initial components and then after the Pre-condensation or further condensation processes co-condense.

The subsequent hydrolytic condensation of the Pre-condensate takes place in the presence of further water all or part, e.g. at least 80%, in particular at least 90%, the hydrolysis of the remaining hydrolyzable groups. A is preferred Excess water, based on the still existing hydrolyzable groups used. In a practical Reasons preferred embodiment becomes Further condensation the amount of water used for complete hydrolysis of the originally used Starting components would be required stoichiometrically (that water that has already been used remains disregarded).

To avoid precipitation as much as possible, it will most preferably adding water in several stages, e.g. in three stages. In the first stage e.g. 1/10 to 1/20 of the stoichiometric for hydrolysis required amount of water added. After stirring briefly follows the addition of 1/5 to 1/10 of the stoichiometric amount of water and after another brief stirring, finally one stoichiometric amount of water added, so that at the end there is a slight excess of water.

The further condensation is preferably carried out in the presence of a of the aforementioned condensation catalysts, wherein  also volatile compounds or reaction components are preferred. The total catalyst concentration can e.g. up to 5 mol / liter.

In the case of further condensation, one of the organic solvents mentioned above may be present or be added, during the pre and Further condensation formed solvent or for preliminary or Further condensation of any added solvent completed further condensation preferably not dampened becomes.

The precondensate reacts due to its Hydrolysis sensitivity with water vapor and therefore can also condensed further in an atmosphere containing water vapor will. In this case, all or part of the addition from further water to the precondensate can be dispensed with.

The further condensation usually takes place at temperatures from -20 to 100 ° C, preferably 0 to 30 ° C. Surprisingly, it has been shown that when the obtained composition to 40 to 80 ° C without evaporating the Solvent achieved a stabilization of their viscosity becomes; i.e. the viscosity remains after Polycondensation essentially constant over a long period of time.

The composition can be after precondensation or after condensing as such with the polyfunctional organic compound can be combined. Possibly however, conventional additives can be added, e.g. organic diluents, leveling agents, colorants (Dyes or pigments), UV stabilizers, fillers, Viscosity regulators, lubricants, wetting agents, anti-settling agents or oxidation inhibitors.

The addition of a polyfunctional organic compound, which has functional groups that only during or after Completion of curing of the as prepared above activated inorganic polycondensate, represents a very important aspect of the method according to the invention.

It is believed that such organic compounds after the activation of the functional groups in the polycondensate reactive groups still present, e.g. OH groups, react and thus to e.g. -O - bridges between the Central atoms of the polycondensate various (organic) Create links between these central atoms.

The polyfunctional organic compound is preferred one that is at room temperature and preferably also at the required curing temperature for the polycondensate with this practically does not react or only reacts to a small extent, but at temperatures just a little above the required Cured temperature of the polycondensate are brought about can be with all or part of their functional React groups with the polycondensate.

Blocked polyisocyanates and Polyester (i.e. compounds with at least two Ester groupings) proved to be particularly suitable.

Blocked polyisocyanates are compounds that are have at least two -NCO groups through implementation have been protected with a suitable reagent, whereby this reagent under suitable conditions, usually elevated temperature (e.g. 90 to 300 ° C), optionally in Presence of a catalyst, with regeneration of the NCO groups can be split off again.

Derartige Verbindungen sind z.B. in der DE-AS 20 57 799 und der DE-OS 31 08 073 beschrieben. Such connections are e.g. in DE-AS 20 57 799 and DE-OS 31 08 073 described.

In the production of the blocked polyisocyanates any organic suitable for crosslinking Polyisocyanates are used. Those are preferred Isocyanates, which are about 3 to about 36, especially about 8 to contain about 15 carbon atoms. Examples of suitable ones Diisocyanates are trimethylene diisocyanate, Tetramethylene diisocyanate, pentamethylene diisocyanate, (trimer) Hexamethylene diisocyanate, propylene diisocyanate, Ethyl ethylene diisocyanate, 2,3-dimethyl ethylene diisocyanate, 1-methyltrimethylene diisocyanate, 1,3-cyclopentylene diisocyanate, 1,4-cyclohexylene diisocyanate, 1,2-cyclohexylene diisocyanate, 1,3-phenylene diisocyanate, 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate, 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate, 4,4'-biphenylene diisocyanate, 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate, 1,4-naphthylene diisocyanate, 1-isocyanatomethyl-5-isocyanato-1,3,3-trimethylcyclohexane, Bis (4-isocyanatocyclohexyl) methane, Bis (4-isocyanatophenyl) methane, 4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenyl ether and 2,3-bis (8-isocyanato-octyl) -4-octyl-5-hexylcyclohexene. It can also polyisocyanates of higher isocyanate functionality be used. Examples of this are Tris (4-isocyanatophenyl) methane, 1,3,5-triisocyanatobenzene, 2,4,6-triisocyanatotoluene, 1,3,5-tris (6-isocyanatohexyl) biuret, Bis (2,5-diisocyanato-4-methylphenyl) methane and polymers Polyisocyanates such as dimers and trimers of diisocyanatotoluene. According to the invention, aliphatic and cycloaliphatic Polyisocyanates preferred.

Any can be used to block the polyisocyanates suitable aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic Alkyl mono alcohols can be used. Examples of this are aliphatic alcohols, such as methyl, ethyl, chloroethyl, Propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, 3,3,5-trimethylhexyl, decyl and lauryl alcohol, cycloaliphatic alcohols such as cyclopentanol and  Cyclohexanol, aromatic alkyl alcohols, such as phenylcarbinol and methylphenylcarbinol. There can also be small proportions of higher molecular weight and relatively less volatile monoalcohols may also be used.

The blocked polyisocyanates are made by a sufficient amount of an alcohol with the organic Reacts polyisocyanate, so that preferably no free Isocyanate groups are more present.

The tendency to thermal dissociation of the blocked Isocyanate is both from the isocyanate component as well depending on the chemical structure of the blocking agent. The thermally most stable are urethanes made of aliphatic Isocyanates and primary alcohols, which only at about 230 ° C. split. The urethanes of the aromatic are less stable Isocyanates with primary alcohols. Easiest to split are the phenyl urethanes of aromatic isocyanates that are therefore less preferred according to the invention.

According to the invention, aliphatic amines can also be used as Blocking agents for polyisocyanates are used.

By reacting polyisocyanates with alcohols and / or Amines form urethane and / or urea groups which Release the blocking agent at an elevated temperature.

Because the cleavage temperatures of blocked polyisocyanates each of the blocking agent and the type of isocyanate depend, can also be blocked according to the invention Polyisocyanates with different activation temperatures be used.

According to the invention, it can be advantageous to use the thermal Activation of the blocked polyisocyanates by a suitable catalyst known for this purpose, e.g.  To promote dibutyltin dilaurate. This is especially true when if without catalyst temperatures of more than about 180 ° C would be required to deblock the isocyanate groups.

Another group preferred according to the invention polyfunctional organic compounds with activatable functional groups (of course, in addition to the activatable functional groups also others, among the Curing conditions, preferably inert functional groups, such as. Halogen, alkoxy, nitro, etc. are present) Polyester, i.e. Esters of polycarboxylic acids, which at elevated Temperatures e.g. a transesterification or Umamidation reaction are accessible.

Beispiele für solche Polyester sind in der EP-A-12 463, der DE-OS 31 03 642 und der GB-A-21 02 430 beschrieben.Examples of such polyesters are in EP-A-12 463, the DE-OS 31 03 642 and GB-A-21 02 430 are described.

Mixtures of different types can also be used according to the invention of activatable polyfunctional organic compounds, e.g. Mixtures of blocked polyisocyanates and activatable polyesters can be used.

Ein besonders bevorzugter Bereich liegt bei 5 bis 20 Gew.-%.In any case, however, it is preferred that the polyfunctional organic compound (s) in one Amount of 0.1 to 50% by weight, in particular 1 to 30% by weight, based on the total weight of the used hydrolyzable inorganic compounds is present (are). A particularly preferred range is 5 to 20 % By weight.

The optimal amount of polyfunctional organic Connection depends on many factors and must therefore go through Preliminary tests can be determined. If you e.g. blocked too much Polyisocyanate, the system tends to yellow (presumably due to the formation of urea and its Follow-up products). The more polyisocyanate is added, the more  the corresponding molded body or the resulting coating. So you can e.g. about the empirically determine the desired hardness of the end product, how much (specified) polyisocyanate can be used to a maximum.

The polyfunctional organic compound can Polycondensate at any time before application to the Substrate or before initiating the molding process be added. This can be in several servings, but preferably done at once. Preferably the polyfunctional organic compound for this purpose in solved a conventional paint solvent.

Propanol, Butanol und Pentanol, sowie aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, insbesondere Toluol und die Xylole, erwiesen.(Higher) alcohols have proven particularly suitable for this with 3 to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. Propanol, butanol and Pentanol, as well as aromatic hydrocarbons, in particular Toluene and the xylenes.

In any case, the solvent should preferably be both the precondensate as well as the polyfunctional organic Disconnect, but not react with it.

The processing of the polycondensate and the organic Compound containing composition must be within a certain pot life. This pot life depends heavily on the type and amount of the inorganic components used and can e.g. 1 day, but also a week or even longer be.

Common coating processes are used for coating purposes applied, e.g. diving, flooding, pouring, spinning, Spray or spread. According to the Production of coatings is preferred, the However, compositions according to the invention can also be used as such are deformed into objects. To do this, you use yourself  usual shaping processes such as Pour, injection molding and extrusion.

Any of them are suitable as substrates for coatings Materials, e.g. Metals (especially brass, aluminum and precious metals), plastics, ceramics, glass, paper or Wood. The shape of the substrate can also be chosen arbitrarily will. Particularly advantageous results are obtained with (scratch-sensitive) plastics, e.g. Polymethacryla ten, polycarbonates and polystyrenes.

In general, those produced according to the invention Coatings of the substrates i.a. a higher wear strength.

The coating is applied in layer thicknesses of e.g. 1 to 100 µm, preferably 2 to 30 microns and in particular 5 to 15 microns, up wear. If necessary, the substrate can be applied before the coating according to the invention with an adhesion promoter or Primer coat.

Surface pretreatment is preferred according to the invention of the substrates to be coated by heating (e.g. PMMA), leaching, mechanical roughening or exposure to a electrical discharge (corona, low pressure and the like). Halogenation, in particular fluorination, of Surface can be particularly difficult when coating Plastics prove to be advantageous.

The one applied or subjected to a molding process The composition is then cured by applying it e.g. heat treated. It is generally sufficient for curing heating to one for a few minutes to one hour Temperature up to 200 ° C, preferably 60 to 150 ° C.

Takes place simultaneously with or essentially after hardening activation of the activatable functional groups of the organic compound (s) instead. By suitable Temperature control can ensure that at the beginning of the Hardening (condensation) of the polycondensate either still no activation or already a noticeable activation of the organic compound (s), as a rule, the Activation (e.g. deblocking) higher minimum temperatures required as the hardening.

The properties of the Coating or the molded body still to a certain extent can be varied.

In the case of coatings, one can Multiple coating done. However, this should be done before Application of the last layer not fully hardened but only partially (e.g. heating for (each) 5 to 15 minutes).

In addition to or instead of heating, e.g. also one Curing by radiation (e.g. with an (IR) laser) possible. Such hardening generally does not lead to any Activation of the organic compound so that this through Heating can be done separately from curing.

If the pre-condensate, the further condensed composition or the organic compound due to use corresponding starting components polymerizable groups contains, the applied layer of lacquer can also can be cured photochemically, e.g. with UV rays. In this The coating formulation is preferably photoinitiators added. Known photoinitiators for this purpose e.g. under the trademarks Irgacure® and Dorocur® im Commercially available. Otherwise a chemical  and / or physical post-treatment of the coating or of the molded body prove to be advantageous. Here would be especially treatment with (high-energy) radiation (UV, laser, IR, microwaves etc.).

(Brillen-)Linsen geeignet macht. Those produced by the process according to the invention Materials show good scratch resistance. According to the invention coated substrates show good adhesion between Substrate surface and coating on (especially on Brass and glass). The coatings also show one good weather resistance (resistance to UV radiation and saline spray, low Water vapor permeability) and are therefore particularly suitable good for protecting outdoor materials, e.g. from Plastics and metals (corrosion protection e.g. with brass). Of particular note is the improved elasticity of the Coatings. Also obtained according to the invention are distinguished Coatings characterized by a high optical quality from what they e.g. for use in optical imaging systems such as Makes (glasses) lenses suitable.
