serial No. 633,327.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER A. PETERSON, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at New Hyde Park, in the county of Nassau, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art t-o which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to those of the adjust-able type.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an adjustable hinge for connecting a door to a jamb, said hinge being so constructed that the swelling or shrinking of a door and jamb may be conveniently compensated for and the parts accurately adjusted with respect to each other.
lith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in t-he arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing t-he invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the improved hinge mounted upon a door jamb, Fig. 2, a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A and B indicate the sections of the hinge which are pivotally connected together in the usual and well known manner. The section B is secured to the door by means of screws which project through openings 10 in said section.
The jamb is indicated at 11 and has ex tending transversely therethrough a plurality of openings 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Mounted on the side of the j amb opposite to that on which the section A of the hinge is disposed is a plate 17 provided with a plurality of threaded openings 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 in registration respectively with the openings 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Likewise the section A is provided with a plurality of openings 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 arranged to register simultaneously with the openings 12, 13, 14k 15, and 16 of the jamb 11. Passing through the openings 23, 12 and 18; 25, 14 and 20; and 27, 16 and 22 are screws 28 which engage the threads respectively of the openings 18, 20 and 22 of the plate 17. It will be noted that the enlarged heads of the screws 28 are disposed adjacent the outer face of the section A so that when said screws are operated into the plates 17, the section A of the hinge will be drawn toward the jamb 11. Extending through the openings 13 and 19 and the openings 15 and 21 are screws 29 each of which is provided with an enlarged head 30 disposed adjacent the inner face of the section A. These screws 29 are each further provided with an extension 31 which project into respective openings 24 and 26 of the sect-ion A. From the construction it will be apparent that if it is desired to adjust the hinge by moving the section A toward the jamb it is only necessary to operate the screws 29 into the plate 17 a required distance. When this is done the screws 28 are then operated into the plate 17 until the section A of the hinge is clamped between the heads 30 of the screw 29 and the heads of the screws 28. If it is desired to adjust the hinge away from the jamb the reverse operation of that just described is resorted to.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a door amb having a plurality of openings therein, of aplate secured to one side of said jamb having a plurality of threaded openings registering respectively with the openings in the jamb, a hinge formed of a pair o? pivotally connected sections, one of which latter is provided with means for attachment to a door and the other provided with a plurality of openings adapted to register with respective openings in the jamb, screws extending posed between the hinge section and the PETER PETERSON.
through certain registering openings of the last named hinge section, jamb, and plate and having their heads disposed exteriorly of the hinge section, and screws extending through the remaining registering openings of said hinge section, jamb and plate, said last named screws having lateral flanges dis- Vitnesses Ro'r. SCAPNY, L. BALDWIN.
