UNETED STATES CARL F. BIELE, OF MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
ADJUSTABLE JAMB UNIT.
Application filed January 20, 1921. Seria1 No.,438,789.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. BIELE, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable J amb Unit, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to an adjustable metal jamb unit for fitting the same in a doorway where the wall opening lacks a proper accuracy of dimensions to suit the intended door a as in the case of built-in tile doorways in tile bathrooms and other situations.
The general object of my invention is to provide a j amb unit adjustable with facility and composed of elements embodying strength and simplicity.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a jamb unit embodying my invention and a fragment of a door, a portion of the wall being shown;
Figure 2 is a partly sectional front elevation of the j amb unit.
In carryingout my invention in practice in the illustrated form a back bar 10 is provided, adapted to be placed in a door opening in a wall a fragment of which is indicated at A, to form a jamb and in practice the-rear face of said back bar is depressed for its major portion as at 11, the bar thus presenting vertical side beads 12 to' overlie the adjacent side surfaces of the wall A. The bar is secured by any suitable fastening means, there being indicated transverse holes 13 adapted to receive screws 14. At the front the bar 10 presents flanges 15 presenting parallel spaced inner sldes.
Coacting with the back bar 10 is a front bar 16 which is formed at the back with vertical side flanges 17 accommodated between the flanges 15 and having guided engagement with the latter. At the front the bar 16 is rabbeted as at 18, thereby presenting at one side a flange 19-against which the door B may strike. The bars 10 and 16 are adjustabl connected through the medium of horizonta screws 20 permitting of the width of the unit being adjusted in the plane of the doorway, each screw 20 extending freely through a hole 21 in front bar 16 and through an alined hole 22 in the back bar 10, the screw having an unthreaded zone accommodated in the hole 21 and the latter being countersunk as at 21 to accommodate the head of the screw. The back bar 10 has on the front face thereof a vertical broad rib 23 terminating at the sides short of the flanges 15, to thereby produce vertical channels 24 in the bar 10 adjacent to said flanges 15, said channels being of a width to accommodate the ends of the flanges 17 of the front bar 16 in an extreme inward adjustment of said front bar. The described formation of the back bar results in ample strength in the bar while providing for the Irgiaximum adjustment of the front and back ars.
The screws 20 each are held to the front bar 16 against axial movement therein by reason of a fixed collar 25 thereon at the inner side of the bar 16, said b-ar being held between said collar and the countersunk head of the screw because of the guiding and bracing relation between the flanges of the respective channel bars, a single row of adjusting screws suflices, the flanges serving to properly aline the bars. In assembling the elements of the described jamb unit a screw 20 is passed through a hole '(21, 21) in the front bar 16 and the collar 25 is then passed onto the screw and positioned adjacent to the inner surface of said bar 16 after which the collar is fixedly secured by brazing, welding, or the like.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A'j amb unit comprising a back bar presenting a depressed rear surface adapted to lie against the edges of an opening in a wall, there being vertical side members at the sides of said depressed surface to overlie the side surfaces of said wall, said bar having vertical side flanges," at the front, a front bar having side flanges snugly accommodated between the flanges of the back bar, said back bar having channels adjacent to the flanges thereof to receive the edge portions of the .second mentioned flanges, and adjusting width of the unit, said screws being held to the front bar against axial movement.
2. A jamb unit comprising a back bar having side flanges and a broad rib of lesser 5 width than the space between the flanges to produce channels, a front bar having side flanges to fit within the confines of the back bar flanges for mutual bracing, the ends of the front bar flanges entering said channels to make a compact structure in an extreme 10 inward adjustment of the front bar; transverse adjusting screws rotatably mounted in the front bar and having threaded engagement with said broad rib, and collars fixed on the screws in the back of the front bar 15 to prevent axial movement of said screws in respect to said front bar.
CARL F. BIELE.
