To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, UNA B. HERRIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brassieres, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to womens undergarments V and more particularly to brassieres.

The object of the invention is to provide a garment of this character constructed so that it will snugly fit the wearer and be retained in proper position without the use of shoulder straps. I

Another object is to construct such a garment so that it will support the figure and yet permit freedom of movement of the arms and body without the garment being displaced by such movement.

Another object is to provide such a garment with elastic bands arranged to yieldably hold the garment snugly fitted to the wearers body to combine perfect comfort with an attractive neat appearance.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of the garment shown applied.

In the embodiment illustrated the brassiere 1 constituting this invention comprises a fabric bodice composed of two front sections 2 and 3 and a back section 4: united with the front sections by underarm seams 5 and which are faced with non-stretchable stgjps 6. These sections 2, 3, and 1 are shaped to conform with the figure of the wearer and the garment is bound along its upper and lower edges with strips 8 which prevent undue stretching of the garment at these points.

The upper edge of the garment is shaped as shown in the drawing being curved downwardly at the underarm portions thereof 7 and upwardly at the front and rear to cause it to fit up over the bust and shoulder blades of the wearer when in use.

This garment is preferably provided with a plurality of transversely arranged stifieners shown in the form of featherbone 9 mounted in the casings 10 which as shown are positioned adjacent the shoulder portions, the underarms and the front of the garment.v These stifiening bones while preferred may be omitted if desired.

A plurality of darts 11 are arranged in each front section extending from the lower edges thereof to a point midway the height of the garment as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 which are designed to provide the proper fullness over the bust and insure proper fit ting of the garment.

To hold the garment yieldably in operative position two pairs of elastic fabric webbing straps are employed which may be either embodied in the garment or as shown be formed separately therefrom and attached thereto to the upper and lower edges of the garment being preferably stitched under the bias bands or binding 8.

Two of these elastic fabric straps 12 and 13 are secured at one end to the front edges of the front sections 2 and 3 at the lower 1 corners thereof as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 4 and extend diagonally around the side portions of the garment and are secured at their other ends to the upper portion of the garment adjacent the shoulders thereof as shown at 14 in Fig. 2. The other straps 16 and 17 are secured at one end adjacent the center of the back section 4 at the lower edge thereof asshown at 18 in Fig. 2, one being secured at one side of the center line of the back'and the other at the other side thereof and crossing each other and the other pair of straps 12 and 13 intersecting, said straps 12 and 13 being secured at their other end to the upper edge of the garment at their points substantially over the bust portion of the garment as shown at 19.

This arrangement of the elastic fabric straps provides for the snug fitting of the garment around the wearer and holds it against riding upwardly and yet permits it to yield sufficiently to be comfortable when moving the arms and otherparts of the body.

other elastic fabric straps, the end of one strap overlappingtherend of-the other, and the-overlapping ends securedlto the center of theback at,the lower edge-of thegarment, each strap extending diagonally toward thefront and secured at its other end to the upper portion thereof.
