IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DUSTING BRICKS.

Specilcaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,934, dated February 16, 1875 application filed January 7, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB N. KERPER, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Dusting Bricks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to machinery for depositing dust or sand upon bricks previous to baking.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my invention, with the receivinghop per and sieve or screen removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hopper, screen, and sieve.

My invention consists in the following parts and combinations, as hereinafter specified and claimed, wherein- A is a suitable frame, through or beneath which travels the endless belt B, operated by any suitable mechanism, and upon which are placed the bricks b to be sanded. C C are cylindrical brushes, operated by suitable shaft-s journaled in the frame A, and operated by any necessary or appropriate arrangement of gearing-wheels or their equivalent, by which suitable rotary motion may be given to the brushes C.

I do not limit myself to any particular arrangement ofthe brushes C, or of the gearingwheels operating the same7 inasmuch as the same may be varied indenitely without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The drawings represent one form only of my invention, wherein it will be observed that four cylinder-brushes are provided and placed at right angles to each other, so as to inclose a square or quadrangular space, whereby dust or sand shall be thrown by themupon the bricks b in such a manner that every surface of a brick exposed shall receive a deposit of dust in an obvious manner.

The hopper D is provided with a shaking screen, E, which may be operated by a crank or eccentric, E', or any equivalent thereof, whereby clogging of the contents of the hopper is prevented. Below the shaking screen E is provided the sieve F. Gr Cr are adjustable slides, which cover slots in the iioor of the hopper, whereby the supply of sand may be regulated.

The sand or other material to be deposited upon the bricks bis placed in the hopper D, and, passing down through the adjustable slots in the floor of the hopper, is agitated and prevented from lumping or clogging by the reciprocating screen E. From this the sand passes through the sieve F, where it is caught by the revolving brushes C, which may be 011e, two, or more in number, and thrown or deposited upon the bricks b, which are placed upon the endless belt B. These keep constantly moving beneath the brushes C, either through or Linder the frame A.

hat I claim isl. In combination with a moving belt or carrier, B, one or more revolving brushes, C, for throwing or depositing dust upon unburnt bricks, substantially as and for the purpose described.

42. The combination of the moving or endless belt B, one or more brushes, C, and hopper D, for feeding dust and sand to said brushes C.

3. The combination of the frame A, belt B,

one or more brushes, C, hopper D, shaking or Y reciprocating screen E, and sieve F, with suitable gearing for operating, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
