I road cars and the primary object of the invention is the provision of means whereby an ordinary box car may be converted into a grain car and further whereby the door sections of the car may be readily positionedor removed, and when so removed the car may be used as an ordinary freight car.
A further object of the invention is the 1:. provision of grooved jambs which are se cured in the car and which receive the sec tions of the grain door therein, and wherein one of said jambs has a lower section which is movable from the exterior of the car, to

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a sufficient portion of an ordinary freight car to illustrate my improvement therein. In
a line with the side walls that provide theopening for the ordinary slidable door 2 for the car 1 there is arranged upon the stiles or uprights 3 the jamb members that constitute my improvement. The jambmembers are of metal and have their confronting faces grooved to receive the grain door sections 4 therein. One of the jamb members, indicated by the numeral 5, is fixedly secured throughout its length to one of the uprights 3, and the second jamb member comprises an upper section 6 which is removable but fixedly secured to the second upright 3 and a lower jamb section 7. The grooved or channeled face of the jamb section 7 is preferably formed on the end of aplate 8, but maybe bolted to the said plate as disclosed by the drawings. The plate 8 is preferably of a greater width than that of the amb section 6, and the said plate is centrally formed with a reduced extension in the nature of what I will term a tongue 9. The tongue 9 is formed with a substantially rectangular opening 10. The tongue is guided for movement in a casing 11 which is suitably fixed to the inner side of the car, the outer face of the casing having its upper and lower edges flanged and these flanges abut with the inner plate 12- of the said casing. Suitable securing means 13 connect the plates 8 and 12 that constitute the casing- Between the plates 11 and 12 there are journaled rollers 14 with which the edges of the tongue 9 of the movable jamh Received in the opening 10' section engage. of the tongue 9 and contacting with the side walls thereof'there is a-wheel or roller 15. The wheel has an eccentric rod opening 16 and a notch 17 that communicates with the opening. The opening 16 is designed to receive therethrough the rounded portion 18 of a spindle 19'and the notch 17 is designed ing in the outer plate 11 of the casing. The
rounded portion of the stem extends through a bearing opening in the plate 12 of the casing and likewise through an opening in the side of the .car 1. This portion of the spindle also is received through a bearing opening in a metal wear plate 22 which is fixed on the outer face of the side of the car, The spindle has an outer squared or hexagonal extension 23 that is received in a similarly shaped socket in the hub 2a of the operating wheel 25, there being suitable means 26 for holding the wheel on the said extension 23 of the spindle.
The wear or escutcheon plate 22 has hingedly secured thereto, as at 27, a latch member 28. The body of this latch is round ed and has from its straight edge an opening 29 whose walls correspond with the shape of the spindle extension 23 and which notch or opening is designed to receive the spindle therein when the latch is swung to latching position. llhe second or free end of the latch 28 is formed with a finger extension 30 that is designed to be received through an opening in a keeper lug 31 that is integrally formed on the wear or escutcheon plate 22 The finger has an opening therethrough for the reception of a locking element 32 such as a cotter pin or the like.
The latch 28 will effectively hold the shaft or spindle 19 from turning and also hold the movable jamb section 7 in alinement with the upper and removably fixed jainh section 6;

trio wheel or roller 15 contacting with the side walls of the opening 10 in the tongue 9, will impart a longitudinal movement to the jamb section 7 to bring the same, say away from thefixed amh section 6. This will permit of the door sections t being received in the grooves of the fixed jamlo sections 5 and 6, and the lower door section t being arranged in the groove of the jamb section 5. Byturning the hand wheel in second di-v rection the jamb section 7 will he moved to. ward and in longitudinal alinement with the jamb section 6, so that the doort will be effectively held between the said movable section 7 and the removably fixed amb 5 The latch is, of course, swung to latching position and is locked by the element 32 for holding the section 7 from movement, It is to be noted that while the improvement is arranged upon the inside of an ordinary box car the operating means therefor is arranged upon the exterior of the'car and f rth t Will b 4 may be constructed of either wood or metal and in the event that the sliding door 2 is not desired for its usual purpose the said door may be cut into sections and employed as a grain door.
The construction is extremely simple and the advantages thereof should appeal to those skilled in the art to which the invention rela tes. With my improvement it will be obvious that the breakage of grain doors commonly employed in connection with grain cars when nailed or otherwise crudely fixed thereon will be entirely obviated, that the improvement may be attached to any ordinary box or freight car constructions, that the improvement comprises few parts which may be cheaply constructed and easily assembled and erected and that the movable jamb sec? tion may be operated in an easy manner and with the least amount of physical exertion.
Vhile I have herein set forth one satisfae tory embodiment of the invention I desire it to be understood that I do not wish to be restricted to the details herein disclosed and, therefore, hold myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.
The fixed elements of the improvement are removably secured in the car to permit of the entry of the grain doors therebet-ween.
Having described the invention, I claim:
J ambs for the grain doors of cars, comprising memloers which have their inner faces grooved to receive the grain doors therein, one of said jambs comprising an upper P6? inovahly fix d se ion and. a lower mov b seot l sa d l w r ec ion having a tongue extension, a casing in which the said tongue is received, anti-friction bearings in the ing to engage with the edges of the tongue, said tongue having a rectangular opening therethrough, a roller received in th open ing and contacting with the. sid v Walls thereof, a sp ndle journaled through the asing passing eccentrically through the roller and removably fixed to said roller, said spindle having a squared portion Xtonding through the side of the car, an operating wheel having its hub fixed on the said portion of the spindle, an escutcheon plate on the outer side of the car, provided with a bearing opening for the rounded portion of the spindle, a latch pivotally secured to the plate and having a central notched portion shaped to correspond with and to engage with the squared portion of the spindle, a finger extension on the free end of the latch, a keeper lug on the plate through which the finger passes and a removable locking element for the finger.
