I posed would present an ugly unfinished ap face 23 of the door.
The holes 27 in the plate 26 are preferably elongated laterally to permit exact registration of the outer surfaces of the filler piece and the door face even though there may be slight errors in the hole positions in the various parts. The 01'- tion 28 is equal in length to the depth 0 the depression 16 and fills the end thereof to provide an unbroken surface for the side of the door opposite'the hinge pin. The extendin flange 29 is turned inwardly to lie flush witfi the surface 15 of the door, abutting and lying flush with the outer side of the hinge plate to give a neat and finished appearance. The space adjacent the hinge end 22 if left expearance upon opening the door and'this is effectively corrected by the filler member 25 whose flange extension 29 may be provided in a variety of lengths to accommodate doors of varying widths.
The hinge attaching holes 20 in the backing plate 18 are symmetrically arranged with respect to opposite sides of the door 10, and may be provided in pairs, as shown, to cooperate with a single row of holes in the hinge plate. The holes in the filler plate 16 are arranged to correspond with the hole positions in the hinge plate. The hinge 11 may be changed from left hand to right hand opening by a mere reversal of the hinge plate 1 The openings 27 in the filler member 25 being coordinated with the attaching holes in the hinge plate 17 the filler member 25 is also adapted for use on either side of the door by simply reversing the member 25 upon reversalof the hinge plate.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departin from the scope ofthe invention which is defined in the appended claims.
