1 Claim.
'Ihis invention relates to a head rest of a type particularly adapted for use in vconnection with barber chairs, dentist chairs, or wherever desired, and it is an object of the invention to provide a head rest constructed and arranged so lower portionY of its curved wall extending a slight distance inwardly of the ad-jaoentextremithat it may be readily equipped with paper for passing all sanitary regulations.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved head rest whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be denitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: a
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View taken through a head rest constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View in elevation at one end of the rest as illustrated in Figure 1, the line of vision being indicated by the arrow;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View in top plan of the opposite end portion of the head rest;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in bottom plan of the structure as illustrated in Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, the head rest comprises acarriage C having arcuate side members I in suitably spaced relation. These members I are connected at their extremities by the end pieces 2 and 3 which are welded or otherwise securely connected to the side members I. The side members I, as herein disclosed, are channel members with their flanges inwardly disposed whereby the carriage may be mounted in applied position in a manner particularly described and claimed in our copending application Serial No. 229,372 led September 10, 1938 and matured into Letters Patent 2,219,799 on October 29, 1940 of which the present application is a division.
The end piece 2, as herein disclosed, comprises an inverted L-bar and each end thereof is closed by a plate 4 which projects a distance beyond the top ange of the member I, as indicated by broken lines at a to provide for the convenient mounting of a roll R of sanitary paper as is required in connection with head rests.
The end piece 3 in cross section is of aA form somewhat similar to a reversed C with the ties of the side members I and spaced therefrom. The' outer Aedge margin of vthisportio'n 5 is formed to provide a cutting edge 6. The end piece 3 closely adjacent to its top is provided thereacross with a slot 1 of a length at least equal to the width of the sanitary paper sheet S. Each end of this end piece 3 is closed by a plate 8 which butts the adjacent end of a side member I. Each of the plates 8 provides a mounting for a rock shaft 9, one end portion of which extends beyond one side of the carriage -C and said extended portion is provided with an operating head I0 whereby the shaft 9 may be conveniently rocked in one direction by the operator.
The shaft 9 within the member 3 carries a pawl I I which effectively holds the free end portion of the paper sheet against the portion 5 whereby the paper sheet is maintained in desired position upon the upholstery pad or cushion P of the carriage C. Each of the plates 4 may be integrally formed with the flanges of the end piece 2 or welded or otherwise rigidly applied. Each Yof the plates 8 may be integral with the end piece 3 and welded to the end member I or vice versa.
In the use of the paper roll the sheet, after the roll R has been placed in position, is threaded through the slot 'I in the member 3 and then extended out beyond the cutting edge 6 a distance suicient to allow thesame to be readily grasped by the fingers of a hand when it is desired to draw off the portion of the sheet that has been used and to bring a fresh portion of the sheet in position. When it is desired to draw the sheet,
the operator turns the head I0 in a direction As herein disclosed, the pad or cushion P in- I cludes a backing plate I4, preferably of metal,
which is of a size to overlie and besuitably en-V gaged with the upper surfaces of the side membersl and the end pieces 2 and 3. Overlying this plate I4 is an outer lamination I5 of suitable material and said Iamination has its side marginal portions held to the outer faces of the side members I by suitable'clamping plates I6. The
plate I4 and lamination I5 have, of course, in-
terposed therebetween a. suitable filler I1. It is to be particularly pointed out at this time that the pad or cushion forms no particular part of the present invention and, therefore, may be of any construction which will comply with the requirements of practice.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a head rest constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modiried by one of the end members for supporting a paper roll, the second end member being substantially in the form of a reversed C in cross section, the ends of said second member being closed, said second member having a slot in its` upper portion and extending lengthwise thereofg Yand through which the paper sheet is'to be;
shaft for clamping the portion of the sheet in'- Serted through the slot against the midd1e porcation without departing from the principles the several parts herein shown in carrying out` our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
A head rest for chairs comprising a member having side members, end members connecting the extremities of the side members, means cartion of the second end member, means for rocking the shaft to release the paper, and means for constantly rotating the shaft in a direction to maintain the pawl in clamping position the lower marginal portion of the second end member extending inwardly of the 4adjacent extremities of the side members and spaced therefrom,
the said lower marginal portion of the second end member being formed to provide a cutting edge. I
. PAUL E. ZUCK. PAUL I. EVANS.
