Description

VNITED STATES fw FFTCE.
PATENT SAMUEL EHRMAN, OF'MOUNT JOY, PENNSYLVANIA.
l' IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENINGS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 35,368, dated May'27, `1862.
l ing Back and Securing Shutters when Open;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
, to the letters of reference marked thereon, in
Which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the cast open boX or casing which supports the hinged pawl or holder; Fig. 2, a side View of the guard-plate'or stay D, to be attached to the shutter. Fig. 3 is a profile View of both,
`showing the pawl A in two positions, A and A.
Fig. 4 shows the manner of inserting the casing B B into the 'rabbet or rectangular recess or grooveof the shutter or window-frame G and its prop against the shutter K on the guard` plate D.
To enable others skilled in the art to-lnake and use my invention, I will further state that the casing or cast support, Fig. 1, consists of two sides at right angles to each other, B B', united above by a square top, I, and beneath by an oval box, O, which also projects and supports the pin orfulcrum a, to which the pawl Ais hinged. This pawl acts against the guard-plate D on the shutter, the edge of which plate projects to prevent friction against the wood, and has a projecting point, e, on which the pawl A rests in a horizontal position. The
groove F in the projecting side H on B is for the reception of the projecting edge of the guard-plate D when the shutter is closed, while the angle e of the plate D enters the open slot E, thus fitting closely to its place.
The pawl or hinged prop A, when thrown up in the casing, leans inward against the side B, over the center of gravity, and thus will not fall out of its position, as shown by A', Fig. 3.
This simple arrangement is easily applied to any shutter and frame, is very convenient to the hand, and can be operated by a child, while it will secure and hold the shutter effectually open. i
I am aware that there are hinges so constructed as to keep shutters fastened back, and also of various devices fastened to the wall or window-sill for the purpose of fastening shutters While open; but I am not aware of any device fixed into the rabbet of the window or shutter frame. and operated substantially as the one'here presented.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A The combination of the casing B B", with its pivot-box C, groove F, and slot E, and hinged pawl A, together with the guard-plate D, when these several parts are combined and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL EHBMAN. Witnesses:
