SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,382, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed January 2l, 1893. Serial No. 459.227. (No model.)
To all whom it may oon/cern,.-
Be it known that I, MA'rHrAs CLAssEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Window, of which the following is a specili` cation. j
The invention relates to improvements in windows.
The object of the present invention is to provide a window, which will be especially adapted for car windows, and which will be air and water tight and dispense with the ordinary weights and ropes in holding lthe sashes at the desired adjustment.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and point-ed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of a window constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corre- 'sponding parts in all the igures of the drawings.
l designates a spring actuated jamb strip, arranged at each side of a Window 2 and hav'- ing sufficient width to present its outer face to the upper and-lower sashes 3 and 4 of the window, whereby it is adapted to frictionally engage the side edges of both sashes to hold the same at any desired adjustment, without lindrical recesses 9, which are located at thebottom of each groove 6 beneath the parting bead; and in order to prevent the screws wearing the jamb strip, washers 10 are provided and are arranged on the screws and in- 5o terposed between theheads thereof and the down.
jamb strip. The jamb strips are arranged between the head or top piece of the window frame and the window sill, and their upper ends ll are bifurcated to receive a top bead l2, which is secured to the top or head piece of the window frame. The spring actuated jamb strips make a window air and water tight, and prevent the same sticking by reason of any of the parts swelling in damp weather, and they dispense with the necessity of employing sash weights and securely hold the sashes at any desired adjustment. The tension of the springs may be readily regulated to adjust the strips to exert the desired pressure on the sashes.V
Although the window is particularly de- /signed for cars, yet the improvement may be readily applied to windows of buildings. v
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention. It will also be noticed that the adjusting screws limit the outward movement Vof the jamb strips, and prevent them from being twistedY when both sashes are up or It will also he apparent that the operative parts of the jamb strips are protected from the weatherand concealed from view.
What I claim is- The combination with a window, of the jamb strips arranged at the side edges of the sashes and of sufcient width to engage ther latter, and provided in their engaging faces with vertical grooves and having cylindrical recesses in the bottoms of the grooves, ad justing screws connected with the jamb strips and having their heads arranged in the cylindrical recesses, the removable parting beads seated in the grooves, and the springs arranged at intervals in pairs back of the jamb-strips, substantially as described.
Intestirnony thaty I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
