IMPROVED KEEPER FOR BOLTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,929, dated October 1li, 186V.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, G. M. WOOD, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of lllinos, have invented a new and useful Improvelnent in Keepers for Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, forming part of this spccitication.

The drawing represents a front or face view of myinvention.

The object of this invention is to obvate the difficulty attending the sagging ot' doors, shutters, &e., to which bolts are attached. Then a bolt is first applied to a new door and the keeper secured in line with it on the door-frame, the keeper will, of course, receive the bolt; but all new wood .will eventually shrink more or less, and the door sag in a greater or less degree, and frequently to such an extent that the bolt cannot enter the keeper.

My invention consists in having the keeper formed with oblong slots for the screws which secure the keeper in position to pass through, and which admit of the keeper being adjusted to compensate for shrinkage and the sagging ot the door.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the keeper of an ordinary slide-bolt. Slidebolts are not generally alfeeted by shrinkage of the wood, as they have a considerable length of movement to admit ot them entering the keeper, even it' the door and doorfralne should shrink very materially; but they are very frequently rendered useless or inoperative by the sagging ot' the door, and heneel construct keepers for this purpose with vertical slots a a for the screws b to pass through, to secure it to thedoor-frnnie. These vertical oblong slots admit ofthe keeper heilig adj usted downward in ease the door to which the bolt is attached sags, and hence the keeper may always be kept in line with the bolt.

Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The providing of the keepers of bolts with oblong screw-slots, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set t'orth.
