FIRE-ESCAPE LADDER.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1905.
Application `lerl April 25, 1901.1.. Serial No, 204,878.
To all whom, it nung concern:
Be it known that I, MARY J. MGARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escape Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nre-escape ladders, and has for its object a ladder embodying strength and eiciency, together with simplicity of construction; and it consists of the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the ladder, showing it in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the manner in which the rounds of the ladder are secured.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes the rounds of the ladder, which are strung' on cables 6, two or' such being provided for each end of the rounds. They have rearward extensions 7, which contact with the wall of the building when the ladder is in use for the purpose of spacing it sufficiently therefrom. The rounds also have a strengthening-rib 8 on their under side.
At 9 are indicated two plates between which the cables extend and to which they are clamped by bolts 10. The rounds rest .on these plates and are supported thereon. To hold them against upward displacement, an S- shaped clamp 11 engages the cables on the upper side of the rounds.
At 12 are indicated blocks which rest on the window-sill and are each provided with a hook 13, which catches under the sill, as shown in Fig. 1. A rod 14 extends through the blocks for the purpose of spacing them, and on one end of the rod a lamp 15 may be placed, as shown. The blocks are adjustable along the rod to accommodate the apparatus to different-sized windows. A link 16 is pivoted to the blocks 12, and each of such links carries a chain 17, from which the cables 6 are suspended. The lower end of the cables have hooks 18, whereby several sections of ladders may be coupled, according to the height of the building.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A lire-escape ladder comprising supporting means arranged to engage a sill or the like, a ladder connected to said means and comprising longitudinally-arranged cables, a pair of clamping-plates engaging each pair of cables, rungs engaging the cables above the plates and resting upon the latter, said rungs being provided with integral rearward extensions and with strengthening-ribs on their lower surfaces, and clamps engaging the cables above and resting upon the rungs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
INIARY J. MCARTHUR.
